Deep tissue massage is a massage technique used primarily to treat musculoskeletal conditions such as muscle pain and sports injuries. Slow, deep movements apply firm pressure to target the inner lining of your muscles and connective tissue.
What are the benefits of deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue massage can also help treat sore muscles, improve stiffness, and help you relax mentally.
In fact, a 2014 study of 59 participants found that deep tissue massage reduced pain in people with chronic back pain.
Deep tissue massage has also been reported to help with:
sports injuries
plantar fasciitis
high blood pressure
sciatica
tennis elbow
what to expect:
Before a deep tissue massage, a massage therapist at the Goodyear Chiropractic Health Center will ask you about any problem areas. Deep tissue massage can affect the whole body or specific areas.
When finished, you will be asked to lie on your back or face under the sheet. The degree of stripping depends on your comfort level, but the area you’re working on should be exposed.
Then, a massage therapist at the Goodyear Chiropractic Health Center warms your muscles with gentle movements. Once the muscles are warmed, the therapist treats problem areas with deep kneading and stroking techniques.
It is not uncommon to experience pain that persists for several days after a deep tissue massage. If uncomfortable, use a heating pad or cold pack wrapped in a towel to relieve pain.
Please consult your doctor before taking a deep tissue massage if:
taking blood thinners
have a blood circulation disorder
have cancer or are undergoing cancer treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy
People with osteoporosis or cancer that has spread to the bones should avoid deep-tissue massage because strong pressure can cause fractures. Deep tissue massage should also be avoided if you are pregnant. However, the Goodyear Chiropractic Health Center offers antenatal massage.
