Swedish massage is the best known and most popular type of massage therapy. The name “Swedish Massage” is only used in English and Dutch speaking countries, in all other countries it is called “Classic Massage”. However, this method, albeit imprecise, was developed by Per Henrik Ling. But it was a Dutchman named Johann Georg He Metzger who developed the French term for the basic grip of his style of massage.

There are five basic grips or styles of Swedish massage.

  1. Effleurage (sliding and gliding)
  2. Petrissage (kneading)
  3. Tapotement (rhythmic tapping)
  4. Friction (with fibers or cross-fibers)
  5. Vibration / Shaking

These five stroke methods are used to relieve mild to severe muscle soreness, and the severity of each stroke reflects the level of muscle tension. In particular, Swedish massage has been shown to relieve symptoms:

Except for special occasions, a Swedish massage can be done by anyone and takes anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes. However, if you have had pain or injury in the past, tell your masseuse about it before doing massage therapy.
